At the basic level the OXO bottle and can opener isn’t that different from all the others out there. You can use it to lever bottle tops off, and you can use it to punch those triangle-shaped holes in can tops. Big deal, right? Well, taking as a given the idea that it’s unlikely anyone’s going to come along and seriously revolutionize this product any time soon, this is actually a rather nice rendition of the concept.
Why? Because most bottle/can openers are flat metal things. For folks with arthritis or tendonitis that can make them a bit tough to use. When your tendons are sore, having harsh metal edges bite into the soft parts of your palms can be agony.
That’s where OXO so often comes into the picture. They make their products with these wonderful oversized handles made of (or coated in) soft, easy-to-grip rubber. They make oversized handles that give you extra leverage so you don’t have to exert as much strength on kitchen tasks. Their bottle and can opener takes full advantage of this, with a large, bulbous handle coated in that rubber. Both the bottle and can opener parts are integrated into the same end, so you don’t have to worry about the one you aren’t using at the moment accidentally biting into your skin.
Unlike some OXO products we own, this one is very durable. The metal and rubber design is quite sturdy and has held up under every use. It gives a bit of extra leverage, making bottle-top removal or can-hole-punching easier on my hands.
This may be a simple thing, but it’s a nice simple thing.
