A moment of silence…

…for Madeleine L’Engle, a woman whose writing has touched so many of us. Her books are highly unusual and amazing, and I was surprised to find out they’ve actually been banned by religious conservatives in many places. I love L’Engle’s take on this:

Ms. L’Engle, who often wrote about her Christian faith, was taken aback by the attacks. “It seems people are willing to damn the book without reading it,” Ms. L’Engle said in an interview with The New York Times in 2001. “Nonsense about witchcraft and fantasy. First I felt horror, then anger, and finally I said, ‘Ah, the hell with it.’ It’s great publicity, really.”

She was an author of truly unique books, and she’ll be greatly missed.

I had the opportunity of hearing her speak at Wheaton College in the late 80’s. (That was where the picture was taken of us on my blog.) Someone actually heckled her about her lack of Christianity, which just shows how ignorant this person was.

It has always been to my great shame that I didn’t stand up and refute those horrible comments. Being 25 was no excuse. I hope Madeleine forgives me for just sitting in shock.

She has illuminated so many Biblical principles in her work. In my opnion, it takes a true intellectual to appreciate her, one who can think outside of the box as she was so adept at doing.

I was sad to hear about this one. Surprised, too, having stumbled across it on Friday, looking her up in the Wikipedia doing research on some of my childhood favourites. Fantasy or not, the ‘Wrinkle in Time’ & sequels had a very intellectual feel to them that appealed to me when I was younger.

God, I love that book. Softly rest her soul.

Bellezza: She truly thought outside of the box, and that’s something some folks can never appreciate.

Jezebeau: Aye, I think everyone I know has read at least ‘A Wrinkle in Time,’ and usually some of her others, too.

    Bildo: Indeed.
