The above-linked stunning photo of lightning looks like a cross between a fireball in the night sky and a ball of crackling electricity. It’s absolutely amazing, but I hope I never see anything like it too close to my house!
Imagine that you (or a fictional character) walk outside of your home to see this sight almost directly above you in the night sky. Set a timer for twenty minutes and free-write, using some, all, or none of the following questions as inspiration as you see fit:
- Describe the scene in minute detail–remember all five senses.
- What’s causing this miraculous display?
- What do you do?
- Who else witnesses this and how do they react?
- What happens next?
Pour your thoughts out on the paper and let them go where they will. Feel free to frame this as a piece of fiction, a narrative, a diary entry, or anything else that inspires you.
