One Picture a Day

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

One Picture a Day provides a ton of photographs and pieces of art, all of which could inspire writers’ exercises. I heartily recommend that you check it out. In particular today, click on the photograph below, look through the selection of “pictures that will make you think,” and pick one that inspires you. Write a story based on it, journal about it, free-write about it, or write about a world in which the scene depicted might take place.

Short Hiatus

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

We’re in the process of importing the blogs over to the new site. We’ve imported the posts, but haven’t yet prettied everything up enough to put in the redirects. Thus we won’t be posting anything significant here until that’s ready. I expect it to be set probably sometime next week. Thanks for your patience!

UPDATE 5/29/07: We ran into a few technical glitches that’ll delay switching over for a little longer, so I’ll continue posting here for now.

UPDATE 6/13/07: We haven’t put the redirects in yet as we still have a couple of things to move over from the site as a whole, but the Epiphanies will be posted here now!

Today… a star!

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

What if you (or your favorite fictional character of your own creation) suddenly became a celebrity? How would it happen? What would you or he be known for? How would celebrity change things–both life and yourself? Would wealth accompany celebrity, or not? How would celebrity improve your life? How would it make things worse? For a fictional character who is already part of a story you’re working on, how would celebrity affect the plot and events of your work?

An Unexpected Death

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

If you’re like many fiction writers, you might have invested a great deal of time, effort and energy into one or two particular characters you enjoy working with. However, many fiction writers report feeling they have little control over some or all of the events that occur in their fiction. So, today, imagine that you’re writing a story about your favorite character when you suddenly find you’ve written his death–and you can’t bring yourself to undo it. What would you do to continue your story and your fiction work?

Honor and Integrity

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

I somehow missed my husband’s latest postings in his blog. Guess I’m not very awake lately. Anyway, the following quote from one of those posts immediately sent me scurrying off to post here:

If you don’t act with integrity all the time, where does it begin and end? Do you start acting honorably when you leave the house in the morning? On the drive in to work? When you clock in? Only after your second coffee? When talking to your own people? Existing customers? Potential customers? When you preface your words with “Simon says?” If you don’t display good character and integrity at all times, why should I trust that you’ll act uprightly when dealing with me?

Free-write on this topic, or apply to a fictional character–in any way that appeals to you.

Desert canyon

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

Use this desert canyon image, found from Trebuchet–a very inspiring visually-oriented blog. Use it as inspiration, a setting for a scene, story, or dream, the basis for a free-write, or anything else that appeals to you.

I know I tend to include a lot of image prompts in this blog, but I feel the power of the senses (in this case the visual) to inspire creativity and inspiration cannot be underestimated.

An unconventional minute

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

It’s time for another mix-and-match. One way to spur creativity is to combine unlikely or random images, words, or concepts and use them as a springboard to start writing. You can free-write using the combination as an inspiration; find a way to include the combination directly in your writing; begin a story based on the combination; etc. Today, pick one of the following combinations of words and start with it:

  • minute, tool, sense

  • draft, tooth
  • cheating, morning, beyond
  • guarantee, subject, unconventional
  • people, manual, chill

Just let go of your thoughts and allow them to make unusual mental leaps, combining the words in new ways. You might even free-write a list of ideas to start with, then pick your favorite and run with it.

Sudden Epiphany

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

What if… you woke up one day and had an epiphany? You suddenly realize you’re on the wrong track. It’s time to eat organic and get in shape, to quit your job and do something you really love, or leave your emotionally abusive spouse and learn to be independent. In just one realization, everything changes.

Start writing.
