Somer: Oooh, ouch. What about celery? It substitutes well in some dishes.

I'm glad to find someone else with as intense of a dislike for onions as I have! Unfortunately, I have an equally intense dislike of bell peppers...

Trish: This one will definitely give you a lot more to work with! It still doesn't have pics, though. I'd be surprised if you found a slow cooker cookbook with much in the way of pics, since most of the recipes are one-pot meals, which... well, tend to look the same. :)

BooksPlease: Yeah, I've beens surprised by how versatile a slow cooker can be. I always thought it wasn't even going to be worth trying to take food photos, because I know most professional food photographers use a lot of 'tricks' to make food look on film like it does in real life. Then I noticed that more and more good food photos were turning up on blogs, and realized that perhaps digital cameras were finally getting good enough to take some decent food photos. I find it's still tough, and mostly involves getting the lighting right, which I'm still experimenting with. But at least it's doable now. Thank you for your encouragement!

Court: This one might be just what you're looking for, then. The amount of time on low is fairly variable depending on the recipe, but I'd say usually 6-8 hours? Some recipes can tolerate longer times, and the author's pretty good about noting that.

Ex Libris: I think both uses of the crockpot have their merit depending on whether you're in a hurry and short on time, or just want to make a good dinner a bit easier.

I bought a slow cooker years ago with the intent of throwing everything into the pot and having "instant" dinner when it was done. But I don't mind some prep work and using the crock pot as an implement instead of an "end-all, be-all" solution for dinner. It seems that more and more crock-pot recipe books are using this approach. Thanks for the review!

I'm looking for a slow cooker cook book - I love my slow cooker, but only have about 3 or 4 recipes for it, sadly. I love how I can throw stuff in there in the morning and let it cook while I'm at work all day. I don't mind doing extra steps the night before, so maybe I should look into this book. How long do the recipes usually cook on the low setting?

I don't have a slow cooker but I've wondered about getting one. I didn't realise how much you could make in one, I thought it was just for putting in food in the morning so that it's ready in the evening. Maybe I'll investigate this a bit more.

I hadn't realised until I tried it just how difficult it is to get good photos of food - you've done well.

Ahhh, the idiot's guide! That's what I need. I can cook maybe two recipes in my slow cooker--and even though I have a few cookbooks for slowcookers, I don't use them much because no pictures. I don't know why I need to see how good something could look if cooked by professionals and photographed by professionals, but whatever. :)
