Lily Yu and Rule Turner are planning their wedding, but that’s going to have to take a back seat to safety when an old enemy of Lily’s grandmother turns up in town. Anyone who could possibly pose a threat to Lily’s grandmother is someone to take very seriously indeed, and he, or she, has already upended San Diego’s underworld. Meanwhile, it seems as though far too many people are unhappy about Lily and Rule’s engagement. She’s Chinese, he’s Lupi, an old flame of hers has put in an appearance, and it turns out that Lily has inherited some wild things from her legendary grandmother she didn’t even know about. Somehow Lily has to keep her ‘ordinary’ life together while saving her family, and all of San Diego, from the bad guys.

“The Unquiet,” J.D. Robb et al

Pros: Enjoyable stories of odd happenings
Cons: Some predictableness; due to the length of the stories, some characters lacked depth
Rating: 4 out of 5

The Unquiet contains five novellas by different authors, all tales of “uncanny suspense and disquieting romance,” as the back of the book says. It includes stories set in the past, present, and future, with notes of horror, tragedy, and humor. The thing that links them all is a sense of something not-quite-right with the world.

Lily’s boss, Ruben, has decided to start up a secret unit that will operate outside the law. He knows this will be almost impossible for Lily to accept at all, much less join in on, but he’s had a premonition that if she doesn’t, all may be lost. In the meantime, things are only getting stranger. A prominent anti-Lupi anti-magic senator was killed by death magic, and Lily’s investigation seems to point to an ally as her unlikely suspect. She has to work with new people who despise her abilities and her relationship with the Lupi, and to top it all off she’s seeing ghosts.

Ruben isn’t the only one harboring secret plans, however. Every Rhej among the Lupi clans suddenly has mysterious business to attend to, as do the dragons. The mantle Lily carries is making her ill, possibly killing her. And Ruben may prove to be far more central to everyone’s machinations than he realizes.

Evrenfels is a high fantasy kingdom, a world of privileged magic-wielding nobility and poor magic-less peasantry. It is cut off from the outside world by the Great Barrier, erected centuries ago to protect the MageLords from a commoner uprising. Outside the barrier, the mages are forgotten as anything other than myth and legend. Magic doesn’t exist, and a steampunk-style technology is on the rise. All this time, the two cultures have existed almost entirely unaware of each other, but that is about to end.

On the MageLords’ side of the barrier, several very powerful people want to bring it down—each for his or her own purposes. This requires the death of several innocent people, but each of the conspirators has managed to justify the cost. It’s surely worth it, after all, in order to restore the kingdom’s power, to keep magic from disappearing from the world, or to crush the MageLords’ power entirely. Of course, the planned sacrificial lambs have other plans, and they have one surprising thing on their sides—on the outside, a scientist and his apprentice plan to sail over the Barrier in a new flying ship to finally find out what lies beyond. And their arrival adds unpredictable variables that will throw decades’ worth of plans into upheaval.
