Obtaining a Review
We get so many requests for reviews (and there are so many items we decide to review on our own) that there’s just no way we can take all of the items people would like us to. Here are some guidelines to help you decide whether or not to ask, and then to tell you how to get in touch.
At this point we get enough items for review that we limit ourselves to things we have an active interest in. This means books on topics that interest us, items in certain categories, and so on.
Item types we usually say yes to:
- Writing and creativity books & tools.
- Cookbooks.
- Cookware, kitchenware, kitchen appliances and gadgets.
- Fiction in genres we enjoy.
- “Wellness” books on certain areas of self-help, qigong, yoga, and so on (take a look at our current reviews for an idea).
- Some pieces of software, particularly those that support writers, cooks and roleplayers (we can now take both Windows and Mac OS X software).
- Some software and programming-related books. Take a look at our reviews to get an idea of what we read.
Item types we prefer not to take:
- Most self-published fiction and fiction in areas that don’t interest us. I know that doesn’t sound fair, but fiction is particularly tough to read and review if it doesn’t interest the reader. We want to make sure we’ll be able to finish and review what people send us. Types of fiction that might interest us: horror, SF, thriller, mystery, romance, erotica, fantasy. Check out our previous reviews for a more specific idea of what we tend to enjoy.
- Roleplaying games. I know, we used to take these. We just don’t have that much time to roleplay any more, however, and we’re not going to use up those precious few hours learning new systems when we could instead be roleplaying. The occasional (VERY occasional) exception is a tool or item that we believe we can work easily into our current gaming.
- Nearly any kind of topic that you don’t currently see represented on the site. Don’t see any historical novels, memoirs, or biographies? Then we’re not likely to jump on the opportunity to review those things.
Also, while we might occasionally take ebooks, we prefer hard copies, particularly for longer works.
If you want us to review your item and it fits within the above guidelines, please email us at the “support” address (at) errantdreams.com–and be patient. It sometimes takes us a little time to respond.
If you think your item is borderline by the above standards and looking through the list of pre-existing reviews doesn’t help to clear things up, do email and we’ll let you know!
