Pros: Enthralling story, entrancing romance, and lush, evocative setting and characters
Cons: …
Rating: 5 out of 5

Jason is Archangel Raphael’s spymaster, and he has a most unique affinity for shadows and whispers. When Archangel Neha’s consort is viciously murdered, Jason agrees to bind himself to Neha’s niece, Mahiya, while he helps to figure out who could have and would have gotten away with such an act. Mahiya seems to be a quiet, powerless princess who fears Neha and refuses to stand up to her—but there’s much more to her than there seems, and Jason, as the spymaster he is, can’t help but notice. For the first time in hundreds of years, he’s found something that fascinates him.
The killings don’t stop when Jason arrives, and they seem to make no sense. They’re horrifying in their nature, and the killer is impossibly quick and powerful. Jason and Mahiya are running out of time—Neha won’t tolerate failure for long, and with each killing she becomes more agitated and dangerous. The unexpected feelings that develop between the two angels only make things worse, endangering them both.

Trixa Iktomi is a bar owner who sells information to the human—and not-so-human—residents of Las Vegas. When she gets the itch to have some fun, she and her friends, Griffin and Zeke, hunt demons for the hell of it. She has a particular fondness for pissing off one sexy, smooth-talking demon called Solomon, typically by burning down his nightclub—over, and over, and over again.
Trixa’s been keeping an ear to the ground for a while now in hopes of finding an artifact called the Light of Life, and she finally has a lead. She knows if she can get her hands on it she’ll have angels and demons lining up on both sides to bid for it, if of course she can survive long enough to keep it out of their hands in the first place. But it isn’t money she’s looking for; it’s her brother’s killer. And she won’t stop until she’s had her revenge, no matter how dangerous things get along the way.

Pros: Wonderful tale of two fascinating characters and an unlikely relationship
Cons: Not as removed from everyday paranormal romance fare as the other books have been

Dmitri is the Archangel Raphael’s right-hand man—or rather, vampire. He has a reputation as a ruthless, cold son of a bitch, so old that no one is even sure when he was born. And that makes him very, very powerful. In his work for Raphael he has come across a severed head with a distinctive tattoo on the cheek, a tattoo that seems familiar to him—so he calls in a Guild expert on ancient languages, Honor.
Honor is terrified of vampires ever since the several months during which she was captured, held, and tortured by them, but it’s time for her to leave the safety of the Guild’s complex and get back to work. She wasn’t expecting to work with Dmitri himself—a vampire she used to be nearly obsessed with, and one whose power and sexuality threaten what peace she’s managed to stitch together for herself.
Things take a turn for the strange as soon as the two meet. Dmitri becomes obsessed with hunting down the vampires who harmed Honor. Honor finds herself able to elicit details of Dmitri’s past that no one else knows of. And both of them find each other strangely familiar.

Pros: Gorgeous, imaginative world, plot, and characters that’ll suck you in and not let go
Cons: A bit more angsting and introspection than I might have liked
Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Vampire hunter Elena is still adjusting to her new life as Archangel Raphael’s Consort, a role that simultaneously gives her great privilege and paints a huge target on her back. Unfortunately, that target also extends to those she holds dear. A vampire has viciously attacked a girls’ school, the same one Elena’s half-sisters attend. The archangels are exhibiting signs of uncontrolled rage, while vampires dive headfirst into bloodlust. Around the world, storms rage and threaten to engulf whole cities. It doesn’t take long for the angels to recognize the signs that an Ancient wakes—one of the truly old, powerful, and insane archangels—Raphael’s mother.

Pros: Fantastic world-building and characters
Cons: Style somewhat stilted; some minor tone confusion; one seeming glaring plot contradiction
Rating: 3 out of 5
Review book courtesy of Penguin Group
Maddy inherited her unusual job from her mother: she’s an Agent of Death, and it’s her job to collect souls and take them to the Door, where they head off to… whatever comes next. Unfortunately that job doesn’t come with a salary and it involves entirely too much paperwork, not to mention a particularly crabby supervisor. As if that wasn’t enough, Maddy’s gargoyle guardian Beezle won’t tell her why he doesn’t like Gabriel, the man who wants to be her new tenant. Gabriel is handsome alright, but there’s definitely something strange about him. It probably doesn’t help that as soon as he shows up so do a bunch of demons, all of whom seem to want Maddy dead. But at least she has one thing (besides Beezle) on her side: she’s suddenly started manifesting all sorts of strange powers that no Agent of Death has ever displayed before. Of course, whether those powers will keep her alive or get her killed remains to be seen…

Pros: Stunning, original, beautiful, intriguing, and mesmerizing
Cons: None at all for me

I’ll have to lead off with a quote from my review of Nalini Singh’s Angels’ Blood, the first book in her Guild Hunter series:
In the world of Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter novels, angels and archangels rule the earth, each one holding sway over a certain territory. Between angels and mortals reside the vampires—humans altered by angels to serve them. When vampires go rogue, it’s the job of the Hunters’ Guild to track them down and bring them back to the angels they serve.
Elena Deveraux is a natural-born Hunter, able to detect and track the scents of individual vampires, and she’s one of the best Hunters the Guild has ever had. Unfortunately, this has brought her to the attention of archangel Raphael, who rules over New York and who has a very special, very dangerous job for her. This job will land her smack-dab in the middle of archangel politics, vicious killers the likes of which she’s never seen, and a highly dangerous attraction to the utterly lethal Raphael.

Pros: Strong stories in fascinating worlds using engaging characters
Cons: I guess I expected a bit more hellhound…
Rating: 4.5 out of 5

How could I resist a read of Must Love Hellhounds
? It includes four hellhound-themed stories by four wonderful authors: Charlaine Harris, Nalini Singh, Ilona Andrews, and Meljean Brook. Each story appears to take place in a world the author has already created, but you won’t find yourself lost despite that—I was only familiar with one of them and had no troubles adjusting. The authors do a wonderful job of making these stories stand alone, and you might just find yourself falling in love with a new author or world!
