It took me a while, but I finally found the software I was looking for. I.e., something that will do nifty type effects suitable for fun CafePress items, will run on my Mac, doesn’t cost an arm and a leg (most software out there does way more than I want so it costs a fortune), and will save as png with transparency so I can do black t-shirts the proper way (the software I was using on a trial basis before couldn’t save as png). Anyway, the software is (drum roll please): Lineform. It isn’t quite as intuitive or user-friendly as Corel Painter, nor does it have as many splufty special effects, but it’s a heckuva lot cheaper, does more than enough to make me happy, and, unlike Painter, will save as PNG with transparent background. Which does a much better job of black-background t-shirts.
I feel like I have a lot to learn with this CafePress stuff, but I also feel like I am learning.
