Review News

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

Here’s the status on the books I’m currently reading:

  • Writer’s Market 2007 Deluxe Edition: Mostly read; also need to evaluate the online service

  • The Oldways Table (essays and recipes): About half-read; done making recipes
  • College Cooking: Read; half-done making recipes
  • Super Natural Cooking: Almost done reading; need to make recipes

I also have more that I haven’t started on yet.

A few thoughts on reviewing books

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

A handful of years ago I read the first three books of Glen Cook’s “Black Company” series. I very much enjoyed the first one, thought the second was okay, and loved the third. Since then I have been repeatedly lambasted for daring to think of his words as anything other than absolutely masterful. So, here I quote my reply to the latest person to take me to task for this:

Interim catch-up

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

Just a brief post to catch up on things. Yes, we have heat again; I hate our oil delivery company. How they managed to sludge up the tank so badly in less than three years is beyond me. Our HVAC repair folk are awesome, though. I can highly recommend the Baltimore-based MYCAV to anyone in that area.

Shivering again…

Monday, March 19th, 2007

Really, I’ll be making some blog posts and writing reviews again soon. It’s just freezing here again since our heat went out yesterday (again). It’s been a long week, so I haven’t gotten much done.

Lemon Chicken Stew

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

On those rare occasions when my husband isn’t home for dinner, I tend to lack the motivation to cook much of anything. Unfortunately this doesn’t tend to lead to a healthy meal. I had just enough motivation to try something new the other day, however, and it worked out particularly well, so I thought I’d share.

Oil Company Recap

Monday, March 12th, 2007

Just to recap, our fun with our oil company started this summer when our A/C went out. We were planning to “fire” them after our current contract for oil runs out this year anyway (three strikes is definitely plenty), but today we found a fourth strike.

Thankfully it was a comparatively warm weekend, but it’s rather cold in here this morning.

Oil Furnaces Suck

Friday, March 9th, 2007

We just got this furnace put in this summer. Today it seems to be spewing out fumes and sounding funny. So, I turned off the heat and someone will be by tonight to check it out. Thankfully it’s a sunny day and there’s a nice bay window in this room. I still feel kind of cruddy from the fumes, but hopefully that’ll wear off soon.

Politics and Cogent Arguments

Thursday, March 8th, 2007

I guess it’s time for my once-every-few-months political link. I do try to avoid them for the most part, but every now and then I see something so good I can’t resist. At least I try to let them speak for themselves.

Mmmm… Salmon…

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

We decided to try out a restaurant nearby last night that we’ve wanted to try forever. It’s a weird combination of a sort of downscale decor with upscale food. When you look around at the cheap veneered tables you just don’t expect the sheer awesomeness of the sesame-curry crusted salmon.
