In a world where most folks are only interested in hearing about scandals, I think that the folks trying to raise awareness of good causes should absolutely take advantage of something like this to get their message out there. I've been following the story as well and had read the article's author's response. I also heard an interview with him on NPR. He has taken the high road in his response to all of this and I really have to give him credit for his positive attitude. Of course, all the attention this has gotten has also raise awareness for one of his pet causes, and so that couldn't hurt.
