Reviews & More

First, two new book reviews. I had a chance to read the advance uncorrected proof of Tobias Buckell’s Sly Mongoose. Books like this are why being a reviewer makes me so happy. I might not make much money, and I might be fighting a losing battle against my review stack, but who could resist the delight of getting to read their favorite authors’ books whole months early?! I also read Tess Mallory’s Highland Rogue. I still don’t understand why the Scottish Highlands time-travel romance sub-sub-genre is so surprisingly populous, but at least I can now appreciate it properly—this was better than the other two I read! Tomorrow’s review should be of a slow cooker cookbook.

Second, a new cafepress design. This one is still in our gardeners & outdoorsy folks section, and is aimed at women. Phloxy lady is a variation on ‘foxy lady’ for phlox lovers. Although it might be a little tough to tell in the image below, the letters themselves are filled with real phlox flowers:

It took a little work to get it just right; I had to make sure the image would show up well on both light and dark backgrounds, and that the flowers would be recognizable in the image.

Next, we put up a small bookcase in our dining room. Normally this would not be worth sharing photos of, but I think you’ll understand why I’m doing so when you see them:

cats, furniture

cats, furniture

Yes, that’s Cahlash, trying his best to be a bookend. Or maybe he figures I’ll not notice he’s there, and put something yummy on the shelf. Yeah, right!

I’m a little behind in catching up with comments and blogs, but hopefully soon!

The Furniture, Revisited

First, in non-furniture news, I have a non-review of Patricia Rice’s Mystic Rider. I almost never do this, but I just couldn’t get myself to read the whole thing. While that means I can’t review the book as such, I think it’s reasonable to explain why I didn’t read the book.

Wheee! As I mentioned earlier, IKEA did make things right by us. They replaced everything that was damaged without argument. The only minor annoyance was the couple of weeks it took to get everything taken care of. Here’s an idea of how things were damaged; this is a corner of a bookcase shelf:

IKEA and a giveaway link

Here’s a giveaway for you: drop by Kylee’s Book Blog to enter to win a copy of Dancing Above the Waves.

My review today is of Lucy Finn’s upcoming If Wishing Made It So. I swear I didn’t know before I wrote my review that Lucy Finn also writes under the name Savannah Russe… which means she wrote another book I wasn’t entirely fond of. She has some great ideas, but the details in her books tend not to add up for me.

By the way, IKEA did come through for us and replace the boxes that got shipped in such awful condition. It took a couple of weeks, but everything’s taken care of. The delay seems to have been that it just takes their trucking company a little while to schedule things in.

And, in case you were wondering, Cahlash only had to have four teeth extracted this time around. Now if we could just get Selene to stop harassing him.

You can expect some more cooking-related reviews soon!

Grrrr….

Here’s the good thing about IKEA: while it’s true that a lot of their items are cheap in a pejorative sense, if you look around carefully you can get some great deals on some wonderful pieces of furniture. We found an awesome dining room set there, a couple of very nice dressers, and some bookcases we desperately need.

Here’s the problem: since there’s no way we could fit that stuff in our car, we ordered it over the internet and arranged to have it delivered. It arrived last night, and about half of it is going to have to go back.

Three bookcases were totally loose. As in, the shelves and hardware were stacked freely in the truck. The delivery folks even looked shocked when they saw that. One of the pieces of backing is cracked through; several shelves are splintered, crunched, or broken, even just at first glance; and we have no idea whether anything’s missing.

Several other boxes had been so thoroughly broken open that things got damaged or, once again, we have no way of knowing if anything’s missing—that’s a fourth bookcase and BOTH dressers. In fact, the only things we’re going to be able to hold onto are one full-sized bookcase, one narrow bookcase, and the dining room set. Truthfully a couple of those boxes were damaged, too, but the damage was little enough that we could see the items themselves weren’t damaged or missing anything.

Well, it’ll be an interesting test of IKEA’s customer service to see if we end up with what we ordered, and how difficult the process is.

In the interests of not simply griping on this rainy Friday morning, here are two review links and two cute cat pics. First, reviews of Crichton’s classic The Andromeda Strain and Pamela Clare’s new and fantastic Unlawful Contact. Finally, cuddly cat photos. Well okay, the first one isn’t so cuddly; if you tried, you’d probably get a few playful scratches:
