Today’s review is of Lori Longbotham’s Luscious Lemon Desserts.
I’m a lemon fiend. I tend to forget about lemon; my adoration of things like mint and chocolate sometimes overshadows it. However, whenever I see this cookbook sitting on a shelf or table, I’m struck with a longing for lemon. The recipes in this book are so utterly wonderful; they definitely showcase the best that lemon has to offer in the realm of desserts.
If only I weren’t so addicted to flavors that come through so well in sweets–and of course to sweetness itself. Or if only I could stand sugar substitutes. As it is… well, I can tell sugar doesn’t set so well with me as it used to, and the last thing I want is to develop diabetes; I wouldn’t be the first person in my family to do so. I’m not quite sure what to do about that. I’ve tried cutting down on starches and sugars repeatedly, even going cold turkey, but it never lasts. I remember reading that for folks who overeat it isn’t so much a lack of willpower as, typically, an emotional association with food, and I think that’s definitely the case for me; sweets are the ultimate comfort food.
