Although I’m not a programmer, I do enjoy the creating passionate users blog. It’s a crying shame that the woman running it got bullied into more or less shutting it down by a bunch of twits who don’t seem to think a woman should do what she’s doing.

Anyone who thinks misogyny is rare or a thing of the past or small rural areas just has to take a look at the explanation of what happened to the woman who runs this blog. She’s funny, smart, and entertaining, and she has an unusual take on a number of technology issues. Maybe that seemed threatening to some folks. Apparently that turned into death threats and explicit rape fantasies regarding her that got posted online. This is a community made up of relatively young, smart people–the kind of people you’d think would be past those kinds of attitudes. Yet there it is.
She wanted the last post on the blog to reflect the fun atmosphere it had in times past rather than the hell things have become for her recently, so she made one more post–a collection of entertaining graphs and images from the blog as a whole. It’s hard to choose a favorite, but I think I’ll have to go with this one:

Don’t support folks who engage in this sort of cyber-bullying. Don’t just sit by and silently refuse to object for fear of being labeled “politically correct” or whatever. Stand up for what’s right. People shouldn’t have to fear for their safety or the safety of their children.
