Friendship (BTT)

This week’s Booking Through Thursday:

Buy a Friend a Book Week is October 1-7 (as well as the first weeks of January, April, and July). During this week, youโ€™re encouraged to buy a friend a book for no good reason. Not for their birthday, not because itโ€™s a holiday, not to cheer them upโ€“just because itโ€™s a book.

What book would you choose to give to a friend and why?

Absolutely, positively, How It Was With Dooms, a photo-story about a family that adopted a cheetah cub. In fact, I’ve bought this book for multiple people already. Every single time I read it, it makes me cry. And the pictures are so awesome—touching, funny, astounding. Everyone should read it.

Well okay, not everyone. That was hyperbole. But still, most of the people I’m good friends with would love that book if they haven’t read it already.

In only semi-related news, yesterday’s book review was of EatingWell Serves Two.

  1. Okay…I am glad that I clicked on your other header and it brought me to your main web page. Wow! You are certainly busy!1 BTW…what do you think of Cafe Press as opposed to Zazzle? Just curious. I have put this book down for my daughter..as an animal lover I think she will really enjoy it…it’s not too sad is it????

Danielle: Heh, yeah, sometimes too busy! But it’s fun. ๐Ÿ˜€

I’ve never heard of Zazzle, so couldn’t give you a comparison. I love CafePress though. It’s extremely easy to use and has worked out very well for us. If you have any questions I’m happy to try to answer them.

The book is both sad and happy at the end. Not too sad, I don’t think.

  3. DeN says:

That sounds like such an interesting book! *looks it up* I wish I was one of your friends (half-joking) ha ha

  4. Stephanie says:

I haven’t heard of this one!! But my son would LOVE it!! He is facinated with cheetahs! He thinks we should get one! NOT!

  5. heather says:

DeN: *grin* Go read it! It’s inexpensive! Or buy it for a friend and then borrow it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Stephanie: Cheetahs are my favorites of the big cats!

I like handing out copies of James Alan Gardner’s Expendable, because the quick pulpy action and very cool hero work, even for people who aren’t big on reading.

I should give out copies of A Wizard of Earthsea (by Ursula LeGuin), because it’s incredibly well written. The first book is great (and resolves with a meaningful conflict), and the hero remains fascinating through the trilogy. He ages well, gaining depth with years.

Now I want to read it again!

  7. Bridget says:

I’ll have to look for this book. I am a sucker for anything with animals …

  8. Marianne says:

Now I’m intrigued… and will have to find this book! Thanks for the suggestion.

Happy BTT, and thanks for visiting.

  9. aaronsmusic says:

I have never heard of this book, but I will definitely check it out! Thanks for stopping by.

  10. Marsha says:

Thanks for stopping by, Heather! And thanks for pointing me toward this book. My two-year-old daughter loves cheetahs (for the past year, her constant companion has been a stuffed cheetah). She may be a bit young for this book now, but I’ll definitely keep it in mind for the future!

  11. I love big cats! This looks like a great book, Heather. By the way, I very much enjoyed your review of it. ๐Ÿ™‚ A 6 out of 5 rating says a lot.

  12. heather says:

*does a happy dance at having gotten so many people to check out such an awesome book*

Scott: I STILL haven’t read Earthsea. How sad is that?!

Bridget: Yay! One person closer to my lifetime goal of getting every good person on the planet to read this book!

Marianne: Woohoo! I hope you find it!

aaronsmusic: Yay again! Now I have to dig out my copy and read it yet again. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Marsha: Cheetahs are so awesome. Other than our lap kitties, cheetahs are my favorite kind of cat. ๐Ÿ™‚

Literary Feline: Thank you! I try not to get all hyperbolic like that, but I couldn’t help it with that book.
