Short Take: “Wound Upon Wound,” Steve Stred

Rating: 5 out of 5

Steve Stred’s Wound Upon Wound: The Collected Serial Novella is short but powerful. Ash, 16 years old, is the older sister to Caleb. The two of them go out to hang out in the park and similar places, but there’s a cloud hanging over Caleb. He won’t tell Ash what’s wrong, but he’s definitely upset about something. At the same time, there’s something else going on in the family–their father didn’t come home last night, and their mom won’t let them watch the news. What could be going on?

This is such a lovely short story. Absolutely beautiful. Caleb and Ash are creating a memory, one perfect moment to hold onto. I definitely had a question or two as I read, but by the end I felt satisfied that I had learned enough. There’s an edge of sci-fi to this book, but it’s mostly just about Caleb and Ash and their relationship. This is a lovely book.
